- "The only thing I loved about the war was the fact that I still lived at home. If you're asking me if it had any value beyond that, I would say that it was the opportunity to right some wrongs."
- ―Plinth, reading from an essay about the First Rebellion[src]
Sejanus Plinth appears in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as the mentor of the male tribute of District 2, Marcus during the 10th Hunger Games. He was one of the 24 top-performing seniors of the Academy selected for a mentor role.[1]
Biography[]
Sejanus was originally from District 2, but his family was wealthy and his father Strabo Plinth's donations allowed the family a move to the Capitol and landed him a position at the Academy. Despite this, he was ashamed of his position, and sympathized with the districts. His tribute was strong and the subject of much envy amidst his fellow mentors. He, however, did not want to perform well, often having a nightmare that he was still in District 2 himself and had been reaped for the Hunger Games. He even offered to trade his tribute with Coriolanus Snow for Lucy Gray Baird, who was considered a long-shot, but Coriolanus chose to keep Lucy Gray.[2] Sejanus annoyed his fellow mentors by talking negatively about the Games. Only Coriolanus supported him, so people began to think the two were friends, which disgusted Coriolanus.
10th Hunger Games[]
After seeing Marcus strung up to poles with no way to defend himself at the start of the Games, Sejanus threw a chair at the screen and left, infuriated at what he had seen. Sejanus tried to protest the Games that night by trying to protest the death of Marcus by holding vigil over Marcus's body. Dr. Gaul had to tell Coriolanus enter the arena and bring him back before anyone noticed. Sejanus agreed to leave the arena, but not without Marcus. Unfortunately, while Sejanus and Coriolanus were moving Marcus's body away from the cameras, the tributes Mizzen, Coral, Bobbin, and Tanner found the two and attacked them. Coriolanus killed Bobbin as self-defense. Doomed, Sejanus dropped the idea of dragging Marcus's body and nearly died, but made it past the barricade to safety. After the incident, he was very sad and did not participate much. For his actions, he was punished, but his father lessened the punishment to being a Peacekeeper in District 12 after he offered to improve the laboratory free of charge. Sejanus insisted that Coriolanus also had to graduate from the Academy, and that wish was granted.
District 12[]
When he arrived to his bunk room in District 12, he was immediately greeted by an excited Coriolanus, who also had been punished for cheating in the Games. Their tumultuous relationship grew to the point Coriolanus said they were closer than friends and more like brothers. Sejanus's Ma sent him things like baked goods and equipment. This did not stop Sejanus from getting into trouble, and his rebel sympathy did not stop. Sejanus had sneakily planned to escape to the north, outside of Panem, with Billy Taupe and a few others, but Snow recorded Sejanus admitting his plan with a jabberjay. Even though Coriolanus thought Dr. Gaul would not have checked the jabberjay recordings, he was wrong. Sejanus was also involved in an incident which led to the deaths of Billy Taupe and Mayfair Lipp, the mayor's daughter. However, it was the jabberjay recording which led Sejanus to be arrested, and later executed by hanging at the hanging tree. His last words he cried out were to his Ma.
Physical Decription[]
Sejanus is described as having soulful brown eyes, and a tall, angular frame. [3]
Trivia[]
- Sejanus was in the same class as his tribute, Marcus, while he lived in District 2. This resulted in Marcus resenting and distrusting Sejanus.
- Sejanus was disliked in the districts for having relations to the Capitol.
- Sejanus wanted to be a medic instead of a Peacekeeper, and he disliked the idea of violence.
